Abstract

As in slavery, where people profited by the captivity and dehumanization of others, this essay argues that the privatization of prisons is somewhat of an extension of this willingness to disregard the rights and humanity of others for the sake of maximizing profit. It argues that the profit motive serves as incentive to lock up far more people than we should and in far worse prison conditions.
