Voice/Craft

Aims & Scope

At Parkland College, we need to hear what young people are saying.

Voice/Craft is a program sponsored by the Parkland Division of Arts & Sciences. This program nurtures and celebrates the distinctive voices of middle-school students in central Illinois.

We will accept submissions in a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and poetry, as well as short-form videos and audio storytelling (podcasts). Written submissions should be 1000 words or less. Video/audio submissions should be 3–5 minutes in length.

To participate in Voice/Craft, students and their work must be nominated by one of their teachers. There is no required prompt or topic. Teachers are encouraged to nominate students and their work from within their existing curriculum and coursework—work they’ve already done or will be doing.

Participating students in Voice/Craft receive feedback on their work from Parkland faculty. If selected by the editorial committee, their work will be published in a commemorative book. All participants will also be invited to attend a final ceremony and recognition celebration on Parkland’s campus.
