Abstract
My proposal was designed both to enhance my own qualifications to teach the courses on Latin American Cultures and Civilizations and the Latin American literature course as well as to finally finish a project and an idea first conceived during my graduate work at the University of Illinois. It involved both academic and field research. First, I intended to read a selection of fictional and historical books on the subject of the Spanish Conquest of Chile and to compare their contents. Secondly, I intended to travel to Chile and Argentina with the objective of contacting people related to the indigenous groups of the Mapuche tribes in order to research their folklore and oral stories and traditions. Taking advantage of my staying in those countries and being helped by some scholars I already know there, I was planning several visits to educational and cultural institutions of interest for the courses mentioned before.
